About Guardian ad Litem
The 14th Judicial Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program (GAL) functions with specially trained volunteers who speak on behalf of abused, neglected and abandoned children who are currently involved in court proceedings. Most of these children have been removed from their homes because of alleged abuse, abandonment or neglect.
There are close to 500 children in the 14th Judicial Circuit’s dependency system aided by over 300 Guardian ad Litem volunteers. The GAL becomes familiar with the child’s case and makes independent recommendations to the court to help ensure a safe, caring, stable and permanent environment. GALs are individuals who respect a child’s inherent right to grow up with dignity in a safe environment that meet the child’s best interest.
Serving Bay, Calhoun, Gulf, Holmes Jackson, and Washington Counties, volunteers advocate for children in their local county with the support of professional Guardian ad Litem staff. Offices are located in Bay, Jackson and Washington Counties. If you are concerned for the well being of children and have a continuing commitment to advocate for a child until a safe and permanent home is obtained, you will be an effective Guardian ad Litem volunteer.
